Set within the historic town of Odense, Denmark, the Hans Christian Andersen Museum hosted an ideas competition to chart the path for future development of the institution. The House of Fairytales ideas competition was open to all international design professionals and attracted 475 entrants. Our proposal challenged the importance of the historic town center. By proposing a design that will contrast the historic context, the site will stand out as an unique destination. The garden will also take precedence as individual gardens represent unique worlds and specific programmed uses. The journey through each garden will lead one through the many programmed areas of the building that is also integrated with the city's planned infrastructure.
Abbreviated Submission Narrative: To celebrate one’s life is to embrace the essence of one’s life’s work. Hans Christian Andersen’s work explored all parts of the human condition. Through his masterful story telling, he transported his audience to imaginative worlds with vivid characters that reflect every day life that is still relevant today. The future of the Andersen museum, House of Fairy Tales will reflect the significance of the man, his work, and more importantly the journey of his imagination. In order to become a must-see attraction and landmark for the City of Odense, the House of Fairy Tales must project a completely unique architecture that embodies the work of Andersen. Instead of replicating or mimicking the fabric of the old city, the building and garden shall contrast with the existing context thus elevating the importance of the existing historic structures while breeding new life and vitality to the city. The building and garden shall be distinct from its context as was H.C. Andersen’s achievement from the contemporaries of his time.
