Campus Student Centre, Sudbury, Ontario |
| Back |
A new student centre was proposed to be located along a major spine for student movement on the campus. Many design studies were conducted in exploring different ways of addressing the unique landscape of Sudbury, a small town in northern Ontario, such as harvested bedrock, ramped earth walls, and sculpted green roofs. A retaining wall along a pedestrian spine will be a major feature for this location and viewed from the new students centre building. To explore the possibility of giving an organic shape to the wall while retaining its function, the proposal was to create a form that expressed 3-dimensional relief while providing interest and lighting opportunity along the wall. 23 uniquely pre-fabricated concrete wall panels were proposed to be create an undulating profile with subtle light bars fitted in between every 3 panels.
