Tower Roof Garden, San Francisco, California

| Back
The landscape design at 325 Fremont addresses many requirement from the City of San Francisco as well as the local neighborhood Rincon Hill Streetscape Master Plan. While addressing these issues, the landscape design also embraces the unique building facade and explores the many possibilities it offers throughout the project.

The angularity of the unique building facade is a major component to the roof garden design. While creating a variety of spatial volumes for a variety of uses, the angular lines also offer an opportunity to create a forced perspective experience. This visual trickery gives the visitor a sense of a larger space than what’s actually available. Standing from the east or west end of the roof garden, seeing converging lines will play on the perception of where the real vanishing point is located. While moving south from the main elevator core corridor, a pre-cast concrete path leads to a wood deck space that offers a residential feel while also reminiscent of wooden piers of San Francisco that are only a few blocks away from the project site. This main gathering space opens up to a spectacular and panoramic view of the city and Twin Peaks beyond. To emphasize this view and offer amenities to enjoy the view, a two step platform seating was created. Users can sit and lounge on this spaciously scaled seating that offers a variety of activities such as sitting to meet friends, lying down to sun bathe, or large group gatherings for special events. The concrete paving at the east and west end of this space are more functional. For the east end, an outdoor barbecue is planned to be installed and integrated into the east wall. The west end is another open patio space that would be ideal for tables and chairs and other more formal gathering events. Beneath the structural trusts in the southwest quadrant of the building, a large planter is planned mainly because of its ideal sun exposure of the location. The planter will consist of a large grouping of Bamboos and varieties of vern to give that lush greenery feel while attempting to conceal the structural element. From the elevator core, the pre-cast concrete paving also leads users to a small gathering space to the northwest corner of the building. The wood deck repeats its residential feel and metaphor for the wooden piers of San Francisco waterfront. This isolated space becomes a quiet and private space that is ideal of peaceful contemplation
