Over the centuries, the lakefront shoreline has evolved. From its first glacial formation to human urbanization, never has the shoreline changed so rapidly than the colonial settlement in the late 18th century and the formation of Town of York (City of Toronto).

The natural topography change at the project site's Scott Street is a constant reminder of our relationship with the shoreline of Lake Ontario. Through our design proposal, we will highlight this aspect through our landscape interventions to raise awareness of the pre-colonial shoreline as well as indigenous connection with this land. Scott Street will be transformed into a welcoming public gathering plaza. With an outdoor performance stage to be located at the base of the existing mural wall, the stage and street can be used for large gatherings, ceremonies, and celebration. |

The existing retaining wall and planters along Meridian Hall’s side of Scott Street will be rebuilt with amphitheatre seating for the outdoor performance audience as well as casual outdoor gatherings. The proposed plaza on Scott Street, Maamigin Park will also feature two Canoe-like planters that will rest peacefully on a plaza that mimics the water waves of a beach front recalling a scene in history that might have taken place on this very location. The landscape plant palette will be biodiverse consisting of native species of southern Ontario. Strategically located, tree planting in Maamigin Park will be located such that it will not interfere with existing utilities and provide natural shade in the plaza. Throughout the roof terraces of the building, drought tolerant native grasses and perennials will be providing a natural oasis to be enjoyed by the audience, staff, and performers alike.
