Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion at Stanford, Palo Alto, California
The building and site was designed with one harmonious vision of expressing nature through environmental sustainability. The landscape design emphasizes discovery and exploration of nature while providing a safe, healing environment for children.

The plant palette consists mainly of native and drought tolerant species with low irrigation water demands. The perimeter of the site reflects many of the native grasses, shrubs and trees found on the Stanford campus, thus fitting nicely into the overall campus aesthetic. Rolling mounds and stone walls are integrated into the lower levels of the building as a way to blend the indoor and outdoor space while providing the necessary security and privacy for the hospital.

The original concept of the landscape design proposed the metaphor a living tree where the building being the armature of a tree and the landscape walls representing the roots of the tree as it bifurcates into the ground. In later stages the interior design team also embraced this concept where different floors of the building evoked different strata of the foliage of the living tree. Other notable features of the project include a 110,000 gallons cistern to harvest rain water both from the site and building for landscape irrigation as well as extensive and intensive roof gardens throughout the facility. The project achieved LEED Platinum, second Children’s hospital in the world to be awarded the highest designation for sustainability by the USGBC.
