Agnes R. Katz Plaza, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania |

This elegant plaza was conceived by Dan Kiley in 1998 in collaboration with the architect Michael Graves for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. With a classic European plaza approach, the plaza is paved with small 4" x 4" granite cobbles throughout with granite bench seating. In the centre of the plaza sits a large bronze Louise Bourgeois sculpture with tiers of long running runnels of water that finally rests in an elegant and subtle pool at the base. The water feature designed by fountain designer Dan Euser also included a large underground pump room that's well concealed with a granite cobble inlayed hatch behind the sculpture. Surrounding the sculpture are three allées of pleached Little Leaf Lindens (Tilia cordata) while Ginkgo street trees stands in contrast. The dark colour bark gives the trees a sense of depth and expanse surrounding the plaza while other eye-shaped Bourgeois pieces scatter throughout as seating elements.
In one of my first projects for Dan, I introduced the use of computer modelling to the office and overlaid the line work with hand-drawn graphics bringing a soft realism to the image while expressing the dense spacing of the trees and contrasted by the openness of the plaza.
